Contemporary dance is a genre of modern dance that emerged in the mid-20th century as a reaction to the rigid structures and conventions of classical ballet and modern dance. In these classes, dancers typically work on improving their strength, flexibility, and coordination to execute high, clean leaps and controlled, stable turns. The class may also teach the mechanics of various types of jumps (such as grand jetés, sautés, and échappés) and turns (like pirouettes, fouetté turns, and attitude turns), as well as how to transition smoothly between movements. Emphasis is placed on proper technique, body alignment, and the use of momentum to enhance the execution of these aerial movements. This type of class is common in ballet, jazz, contemporary, and other forms of dance that require strong technical foundations for dynamic movements.
